13 Jul Harrow Council votes to create new conservation area
One of Harrow’s historic neighbourhoods is to be protected for residents and future generations after West Drive and Bellfield Avenue were made the London Borough of Harrow’s newest conservation area.
Cabinet Members agreed on June 29 to safeguard the character of the area following support from local people during a six-week public consultation earlier this year.
From 2006 to 2016, both roads were part of the West Drive Conservation Area. Following a review of potential areas for designation as conservation areas in late 2022, the Council identified West Drive and Bellfield Avenue for potential redesignation.
The area was once part of the wider Harrow Weald Park Estate which included some of the surrounding residential streets. The buildings are mainly two storey suburban style buildings from the inter-war period. Bellfield Avenue has an attractive leafy feel to it as trees intersperse the pavement all the way to the top of the avenue. The open field at the end of the avenue creates a pleasant country feel and is typical of the way inter-war suburban development would suddenly stop and meet the countryside beyond. The circular space created by West Drive Gardens crossing West Drive is another interesting and pleasing aspect.
Deputy Leader for the London Borough of Harrow and Cabinet Member for Planning and Regeneration, Councillor Marilyn Ashton, said: “We’re pleased to be restoring pride in Harrow for our residents who want to cherish and value the local neighbourhoods in which they live.”
“I’m pleased that the West Drive Bellfield Avenue area is being given its due as an area worthy of protection so that its charm can be enhanced and celebrated for decades to come.”
The designation means that the Council will pay special attention to the desirability of preserving or enhancing the character or appearance of the area where any application for planning permission is submitted.
