20 May Application submitted to convert Harrow cinema into 78 apartments
A contractor has submitted a planning application to redevelop Harrow’s Safari Cinema into a residential scheme.
The development would be comprised of 78 apartments rising up to 11 storeys, and the current cladding would be removed in order to restore the original art deco façade.
The council is expected to make its decision on 20 June 2022.
Emma White, planning consultant representing Asprea 2 Ltd, said: “Harrow Council has wanted to see the art deco façade restored for years.
“It is enshrined within their planning policy for the site and the site has also been earmarked for residential redevelopment.
“For the first time, our client is in a position to be able to deliver on the council’s aspiration – to see the façade restored and Station Road enhanced by its restoration.”
Councillor Stephen Greek added: “You really do need these sorts of developments in areas to create a real sense of place, a sense of community and something that will raise the quality of life for its residents.”
The Safari Cinema opened on Station Road as the Dominion Cinema in 1936 and included seating for 2,500 people.
