Barnet Council uses recycled rubber waste for resurfacing

Barnet Council has resurfaced a road using granulated rubber from recycled tyres in a bid to reduce carbon.

Tarmac Kier Joint Venture carried out the work as contractor for highway maintenance and improvements.

The ULTIPAVE R rubber and stone combination uses warm-mix asphalt technology. The material is a high-performance asphalt suitable for heavily trafficked roads, like motorways, as well as rural roads.

Peter Hyde, Board Member of Tarmac Kier JV, said: “Rubber modified SMAs offer a more sustainable option for local authorities. It’s extremely positive to see Barnet Council delivering environmental savings by leveraging this new technology and unlocking the benefits of a circular economic approach.”

Councillor Peter Zinkin, Vice Chairman of Barnet Council’s Environment Committee, added: “This approach in Barnet helps the council as part of its demanding sustainability strategy, while maximizing the reuse of end-of-life tyres which would have been exported as waste.

“Materials’ technology in road resurfacing has moved forward and really significant improvements in the sustainability of road resurfacing are being achieved with our new joint-venture contractor and Tarmac’s materials skills.”
