29 Nov Harrow Civic Centre to be knocked down for housing development
Harrow Civic Centre is to be bulldozed to make way for a new housing development, while town hall services will be relocated to Wealdstone.
Around 1,500 new homes will be built on the area known as Poets Corner as part of a £690million project in the borough.
There are plans to move the new town hall to the council depot in Forward Drive while construction is carried out on the new civic centre. Services will then be divided between the depot, which will act as the principal focus for staff, and the new civic centre, which will remain Harrow’s main civic building.
The new centre is expected to be smaller than the current site due to changes in working habits following the pandemic.
Councillor Graham Henson said: “Harrow is crying out for high-quality affordable housing. Too many people are trapped in unsuitable, overcrowded accommodation. They deserve places to live that will support their success and allow their families to flourish.
“We are committed to doing all that we can to meet Harrow’s future needs within our existing developed environment.
“That means using sites like these much more efficiently. By making this commitment, we can protect our precious greenbelt and ensure that the development proposals we bring forward are appropriate, sustainable and backed by investment in infrastructure.”
