Heathrow launches refreshed sustainability strategy

Heathrow Airport has launched its refreshed sustainability strategy for the next decade – Heathrow 2.0: Connecting People and Planet.

The plan outlines how the airport will make sustainability a priority with ambitious goals to tackle climate change, reduce carbon emissions, and improve the airport and surrounding areas for those who live and work there.

The two pillars of the plan are focused on net zero aviation and making Heathrow a great place to live and work.

The plan was devised following a consultation with local and national stakeholders.

Heathrow plans to achieve net zero aviation by 2050.

This year, Heathrow commits to introducing a Sustainable Aviation Fuel incentives programme for airlines, launch a new Giving Back initiative in community investment and volunteering, and develop a Nature Positive Airport Plan to manage biodiversity at the airport.

John Holland-Kaye, chief executive at Heathrow, said: “The launch of our refreshed Heathrow 2.0 strategy is a landmark moment in our sustainability journey, one which accelerates the shift in our industry towards a greener future.

“Decisive action needs to be taken this decade to remain on track for net zero and 2.0 sets out the roadmap to get us there. Not only will we cut carbon, but our ambitious strategy will maintain Heathrow’s leadership in innovation, social mobility and community engagement.”
