06 Apr More film space planned for London
Plans for another film studio complex have been revealed, on land next to where Sky plan their new studios, near Borehamwood, already home to Elstree Studios.
Hertswood Studios would become the UK’s largest-ever film studio if it is included in the Local Plan and then granted planning permission. It would provide 1m sq. ft of film studio space, including 21 stages, supporting workshops, and a hotel for visiting actors and crew.
600,000 sq. ft of college space is also being proposed as part of a future Local Plan allocation. This would operate alongside Elstree Screen Arts Academy, providing local young workers and those looking for a career change with the opportunity to be part of two of the UK’s fastest growing industries – film and television.
Hertswood Studios would be built on Rowley Lane, next to the Sky Studio development, on 90-acres. Bidwells, acting for the landowner, is understood to be in talks with several film studios and hopes to secure funding and a development partner for the project.
According to an Oxford Economics submitted with the plans, the scheme would contribute £1.17bn a year to the economy, and create over 14,000 jobs.
