M&S plans 10-storey university accommodation above Hammersmith store

High Street retailer Marks and Spencer plans to transform its Hammersmith store with a new “market-style” food hall and university halls building.

M&S, which has occupied the site at 27 King Street near Boots and Lloyds Bank for 100 years, says the existing building, partially single- and partially double-storey, is in need of repair and “no longer fit for purpose”.

Now the company wants to build a university halls building above a new store with space for 400 rooms.

The existing food hall will be replaced with a new one measuring 15,000 square-feet, according to the M&S website. The plans also include a new route throughout the site and a public space at the south side.

The website says: “King Street M&S’s proposals seek to recognise the potential of the site and its importance to the King Street area by repositioning the existing M&S offer,” adding that customers would have access to a market-style shopping experience with a wider range of food products.
