RCKa Architects win approval for Barnet affordable homes

Two affordable homes schemes in Barnet, north London, have been given the thumbs-up.

Barnet Council-owned housing provider, Barnet Homes, commissioned architecture practice RCKa to bring forward proposals for the two schemes to fit into existing suburban housing estates.

The developments for the two infill sites have now been granted planning permission. They are at the Broadfields Estate in Edgware and Coppetts Road in Muswell Hill.

RCKa’s proposals for Broadfields are for 28 new homes on a thin strip of land described as “a jumble of under-used garages and stores”, which is surrounded by inter-war and post-war homes.

The new housing – a mix of one- and two-bedroomed apartments – will consist of two irregularly-shaped five-sided blocks at the south-eastern edge of the site. This will free-up the remainder of the plot of land to be cleared and replaced with new public open space.

RCKa’s Coppetts Road scheme is for 15 new affordable homes on an under-used garage site, which will retain existing mature trees in a new central park at the heart of the site, which is next to the Martins Walk Estate

New housing will be in two blocks: one four-storey building containing apartments and maisonettes and another with three-storey terraced homes.
